Methods of measuring the moisture

Moisture is an important factor in human life, from health, living, learning, and production to the importance of goods, supplies, organisms, machinery … Determining moisture becomes an indispensable job to ensure the best living and preservation environment in which moisture is kept at the most balanced and appropriate level.

Depending on the object to be measured, the manufacturer has designed various types of meters with different measurement methods. What methods are they? Let us learn through the following article.

Method 1: Measure moisture of grain and cereals  with a grain moisture meter

Concepts and characteristics: The grain moisture meter, also known as the agricultural produce moisture meter, is a particularly useful device in the agricultural industry. It determines the quality and storage time of the seed. This moisture meter uses the principle of resistance when measuring, with two types of equipment: portable moisture meter with external resistors and sharp sticks to directly poke seeds containing seeds (rice, rice, beans …) and resistors located in the sample analysis chamber.

Method of measurement: The grain moisture meter is very simple to use, just plug the probe into the bag, package or seed you want to measure, the result will be returned within seconds and displayed on the screen. For the type with the sample chamber, you should mix the paddy, rice, beans … before taking out a little representative to check the moisture, then put the sample into the chamber/tray and press the “Start” button, the results will be displayed on the screen after a few seconds of analysis.

Advantages: The measurement results are fast, accurate, little operation, easy to use and do not damage the sample, especially, the measuring machine has a sample chamber with moisture measurement mode for each specific type of grain.

Disadvantages: A hygrometer with a sharp stick gives poor results when measuring large seeds.

Method 2: Wood moisture meter and material with the resistive method

Definition and characteristics: Wood moisture meter and materials used for direct measurement. The machine has a probe with a pointed stick or other shape used to poke/stab into a sample area to determine moisture content. The machine is shaped like an electrical plug, we just plug, poke into the sample to be measured and read the results displayed on the screen.

Advantages: The device has a compact design, easy to use anytime, anywhere to measure moisture in just one operation, without wasting time preparing samples.

Disadvantages: Having to perform multiple measurements in different locations to have the most relative average value, can damage the sample.

Method 3: Honey moisture meter by light refraction method

Concepts and characteristics: Honey moisture is also known as the composition of water in honey plays a very important role in assessing the quality of honey, To evaluate the quality of honey before and after storage, the use of honey moisture meter is extremely necessary. Honey moisture meter has two types: mechanical and digital refractometer.

  •  For muscular refractometer: You put a few drops of the sample onto the prism surface to the number of samples spills evenly. Let the refractometer be at eye level and read the results through the eyepiece.
  •  For electronic type refractometer: provide a few drops of the sample to the prism and press the “Start” button the result will be displayed after a few seconds on the electronic screen.

Before measuring, you need to prepare before using it. In particular, due to the nature of the refractometer, when measuring to get the most accurate results depends very much on the light source.

Method 4: Use scales to measure by drying method

Definition and characteristics: Weighing for moisture analysis is a specialized scale for drying materials and then calculating the percentage of moisture content of the sample after drying. We only need to read the results displayed on the screen after drying without having to calculate them as ways to determine manual humidity.

How to use: adjust the scale table so that the needle to the center of the machine to weigh most accurately. Allow the sample to be measured on a scale to analyze moisture. Select the measurement mode, the time and temperature suitable for samples. Usually drying food from 100 degrees to 105 degrees.

Advantages: the machine correctly measures moisture, low errors, compact design, easy to use, saving time.

Disadvantages: Only suitable for small sample types, samples must be prepared before measurement, samples after measurement are no longer usable.

In conclusion

When moisture becomes a standard in most industries, Determination of moisture becomes extremely important and necessary. The above article has provided 4 methods of measuring humidity popular today. Depending on your needs and purpose of measurement, you can choose the best moisture meter that satisfies you.
